The 5V pin is a direct connection to the 5V rail and although intended for output can also be used for input. That being said of you are not confident about this then it is probably best not to do it as feeding 5V in to the wrong pin pertinently damage the Pi. A better solution for you might to be just to use a second USB port for power. Technically this should not work as a USB port should close down when more than 200ma is pulled without the device asking for more (and the Pi can not do this) but I have not found a computer that actually does this.

Thanks Alistair,

The link you sent for the GPIO pins is very detailed. Unfortunately it's caused me some confusion - you say you powered the Pi via the GPIO pins, from the USB adapter. The way the GPIO power pins are described on that linked page, they are for power output from the Pi, rather than power input? Do you need to set something else on the board to switch the pins to be able to receive power, or does it do that automatically? Apologies if that seems like a dumb question, but my background is stronger in software, not so much in electronics.

Hi John, it is GPIO 14 and 15 you will need for the serial communication. More details at http://elinux.org/RPi_Low-level_peripherals . I am afraid I did not try any USB peripherals but I have driven some of my own projects at the same time. The odd low power device should be okay but I suspect WiFi, 3G or HDMI converters may take it over the limit. If this happens the host device will shut down power to the USB port.

Hi Alistair,

This is exactly the solution I was looking for, thanks! I have ordered the serial-to-usb adapter you linked to. I am completely new to my Pi, and have no clue about using the GPIO pins - I would be grateful if you could provide a pin-to-pin diagram showing how you connected the serial adapter pins to the GPIO pins with that cable, I can't see clearly from the photo. Being a bit of a novice I don't want to accidentally fry my Pi getting it wrong!

Also, im going to be using a Nexus 10, I see the Pi had enough power to boot from the Nexus 7 USB supply - did you try any peripherals plugged into the Pi which would draw power too? Im thinking it probably couldn't cope - you do mention a USB hub for using a keyboard at the same time.

Thanks again,

John.
